Dahlin, born of a Norwegian mother and a Swedish father into a family of three brothers was raised in the Baptist faith and resided in Chicago, Illinois, USA.He served in the U.S. Army Infantry signal corps on Manila in the Philippines in 1945, and served as an occupation force with the retiring 96th, then the 86th divisions until being honorably discharged. He graduated from the National College of Chiropractic and practiced as a chiropractor in Chicago for 32 years before retiring from practice because of an occupational impairment. He married a lovely Irish lady Patricia, was blessed with one son who died in early infancy in 1981. Upon retirement in 1995, Don and Patti moved to reside in Prescott, Arizona. In his early teenage life Don became interested in hypnosis after reading a small booklet about it and he asked his youngest brother Ray what he thought about it. Ray thought he could help him with it. Eventually, they agreed upon trying it. He wrote about their experiment in his first book, which he began writing in 1960, the year he entered into a chiropractic practice. He eventually became a student and was hypnotized in a professional course in hypnosis, and from there on his level of awareness and memory declined rapidly so that he had difficulty in remembering what was said or happened a few minutes earlier, or even what he had for breakfast. His complete recovery from hypnosis was through Dianetic processing, Scientology, a study of General Semantics, and applying the methods of self-observation originated by the Greek mystic, G. I. Gurdjieff.Becoming aware of how hypnosis is common in our society, he learned to analyze and criticize hypnotists, religion, psychiatry, the medical profession and scholastic system and began writing about them.
